It took Jude some time to explain the ruse of leaving the GPS in the house to Fox before Felicia called her uncle.
âIâm in, one hundred percent,â Uncle Abe said. âIâve got a cabin with two bedrooms and a couch that wonât be rented until November.â He paused. âIâll get it ready right now. We donât technically open for another week, so itâs basically me and some staff. Pretty empty.â
Empty? Would that leave them more of a target or less? If Aaron found them... But Jude would make sure that didnât happen. âAs long as the animals are still there, Gracie will be thrilled.â
âFive horses Levi Duke helps me manage and the two rescued donkeys you and Nora arranged for us to get. The swimming poolâs ready, too, if her wound is healed enough that she can be in the water.â
Felicia made a mental note to ask the doctor about swimming.
Uncle Abe cleared his throat. âHoney, I know this is a stressful time for you. You sure you donât want to call your mom?â
âMom needs to be with her sister. Iâm okay. Really. Figuring things out one day at a time.â
âThatâs all we can do. See you soon, baby.â
She hung up, her uncleâs warmth echoing in her heart. Maybe it was going to be all right. But how would she handle Jude watching their every move in the cabin when she found her thoughts trending more and more in his direction?
The doorbell chimed, and she heard Jude let Nora and Seth inside. She hugged her best friend close. Nora, a head taller than Felicia, returned the squeeze.
âAudreyâs all fixed and parked outside. Iâll help you pack up some things. And my mom sent these over.â Nora wiggled a tin. âChocolate chip and walnut. Judeâs favorite, but she figured theyâd go over well with you and Gracie, too.â
Nora and Felicia watched as the GPS tracker was photographed.
âA crime scene tech in civilian clothes and car will arrive later to examine it for prints, on the off chance there are any.â Jude slid the photo out and put it in another frame Felicia had found in the garage.
âSo youâre going to make the house look occupied?â Nora asked while Seth installed the timers theyâd picked up on the bedroom and living room lamps.
âAs best we can,â Jude said. âLights on and off. GPS tracker still active. Her car in the driveway. Itâs not foolproof, but it might buy some time for Fox to continue the investigation.â
âAnd youâre acting as what? A bodyguard?â Nora said.
Jude didnât quite look at his sister. âAffirmative.â
Nora shot a quick glance at Felicia, but she kept her face even. Later in the bedroom, Nora cornered her. âSo...you and Jude will be in close proximity for a while, huh?â
She nodded, folding Gracieâs T-shirts and putting them into a duffel bag.
âAnd how are you feeling about that?â Noraâs intense blue gaze was so like Judeâs.
âItâs not optimal, but Iâm making the best of it.â
Nora sighed. âAs long as youâre not being steamrolled.
